Description:

Data is an essential component of research and therefore invaluable for researchers. Whether small samples or “big data” - the systematic and comprehensible handling of research data is a central component of good scientific practice. Systematic research data management offers support for daily research practice in the fulfilment of the good scientific practice (GSP) and thus enables the traceability, reproducibility and reusability of scientific research. In the course you can try out some best practices.

This event is part of a series of further training courses on research data management organized by the Service Center Research Data in cooperation with the Graduate Academy. Further dates can be found on the websites of the Graduate Academy and the Service Center Research Data.

Day 1: Introduction to research data management: securely storing, organizing and retrieving research data: The first part offers an introduction to research data management (RDM), presents the aims of RDM, the FAIR principles, as well as important terms and methods. Practical information is provided on how researchers can quickly take their first steps in RDM, when RDM practices are useful in daily research practice and how checklists can provide support. You will learn how to store and share research data securely and how to name, structure and organize it in a comprehensible way and have the opportunity to discuss this with respect to your own data.

Day 2: Describing research data in a comprehensible way: metadata, taxonomies and documentation: In order to fulfil the requirements of good scientific practice, not only research data in the narrower sense should be taken into account. Important metadata and the documentation of the research enrich the research data by describing the context in which the data was created in more detail. The second part of the workshop therefore offers an in-depth look at the topic of data documentation and metadata. A playful exercise will be used to teach various documentation options. Procedures will be presented that will enable you to provide your research data with metadata, metadata standards and standardized descriptions, which will then be discussed with regard to your own research.

This event is part of a training series on research data management and is offered in co-operation with the Service Center Research Data. Further events can be found on the websites of the Graduate Academy and the Service Center Research Data.
