Description:

The course builds on the basics of project management as it is used in business and academia - therefore, it is also a general introduction to this topic. At the same time, the viewpoint of doctoral candidates is incorporated and the focus is on techniques that are suitable for research in general and for doctoral studies in particular. All aspects of the PhD project will be considered, from topic selection to defense.

The course does not introduce golden rules, but explains the pros and cons of different procedures. The participants are encouraged to contribute their own experience and to adjust the techniques presented. These techniques are practiced hands-on, which results in an individual planning of your own doctoral project.

The following components of project management will be covered in the course:

• Content and scope planning / topic finding including creativity techniques

• Structure and overview planning incl. Gantt chart critical path method

• Agile techniques including rolling wave planning and Kanban / Scrum

• Personnel management incl. teamwork and leadership / being led

• The interplay of quality, time, and financial planning
